 1. Introduction
_____________________________

This readme file contains important information about the
English translation of Tsukihime. Please read it before you
    start playing.

Tsukihime is a visual novel, released in December 2001 by
TYPE-MOON. It tells the story of Tohno Shiki, who since a
life-threatening accident in his youth is cursed with the
ability to see "lines" on everything around him. Lines
along which objects can easily be cut.
Having lived with foster parents for seven years, Shiki is
recalled to the household of his family. He had lost all
contact with his family over this entire period, making it
difficult for him to get used to the new situation.
As he gradually learns more about his past, the situation
becomes more and more unfamiliar and dangerous.

 3. System Requirements
_____________________________

Tsukihime makes use of the ONScripter engine, which is
designed to run on most modern computers today. The
    following is an indicative minimum:

       OS Windows 98/Me/2000/XP
       CPU Pentium 2 500MHz
       RAM 128MB
       Video 640x480x16bits
       DirectX 8.1 or higher
       HDD 150MB of free space
CD-ROM Any drive capable of playing CD-Digital Audio

Certain effects used in the game require a faster CPU to be
displayed correctly, in the range of 1GHz or higher.
This game has not been thoroughly tested on Windows Vista.

 4. Installation
_____________________________

To install Tsukihime English on Windows, start the
installation program and follow the instructions on screen.
You will require the Japanese Tsukihime CD during the
installation procedure. Please install Tsukihime English
to its own directory, do not install Tsukihime English
to a directory already containing the Japanese game.

Please read chapter 7 of this readme for information about
installing the game music. Playing the game without music
    is NOT recommended.

 5. Playing the game
_____________________________

Tsukihime English makes use of the ONScripter engine. Due
to its cross-platform design, the menubar at the top of the
window as found in the Japanese version of Tsukihime, will
not be available in the English version. Many of the
options and settings can still be accessed by using the
keyboard. Here follows a list of keyboard shortcuts and
    their functions:

     Key | Function
    ------+-------------------------------------------------
0 | Switch between slow, normal and fast text speed
1 | Set text speed to slow
2 | Set text speed to normal
3 | Set text speed to fast
          |
h/left| Move the cursor up one option
l/rght| Move the cursor down one option
k/up | Go back one page (log mode)
j/down| Go forward one page (log mode)
          |
f | Switch between window mode and fullscreen mode
o | Display each page of text instantly
s | Fast-forward through the game until the key is
          | pressed again
CTRL | Fast-forward through the game until the key is
          | released, also skipping all transitions
    ------+-------------------------------------------------

You can advance the game text by pressing Enter, Space,
Keypad Enter or the left mouse button. Pressing Escape or
the right mouse button will display the in-game menu. From
here you can save and load games, access extra in-game
features or quit to the main menu.

There are five main routes in Tsukihime, being the Arcueid,
Ciel, Akiha, Hisui and Kohaku routes. To play a certain
route, simply focus specifically on that character.
TYPE-MOON recommends playing the game in the above order,
which is probably the best in most cases. Note that it is
not recommended to play Kohaku's route before Akiha's. For
people who have seen the Shingetsutan Tsukihime anime it
is also not a good idea to save the Arcueid route for
last, as the anime will have spoiled a lot of the story
and there will be very little new material left to read
    after the other storylines.

A walkthrough is supplied in the Tsukihime English
installer, but it is NOT RECOMMENDED to use it. The game
will provide you with sufficient hints and tips to complete
each route without much trouble. The game is, in fact,
quite easy. Just make sure to save regularly, and if you
don't want to read through old scenes again enable the
'skip parts previously read' setting in the options menu.

 6. Known Issues
_____________________________

The savegames from the Standard version are not compatible
with the savegames from the Non-Ero version and vice-versa.
This is not the fault of Tsukihime, it is caused by the
horrendous way NScripter and ONScripter create their save
    files.

Windows Vista does not allow any application to store or
change files in their own Program Files directory, unless
they are run with Administrator privileges. Instead, Vista
will save all changes in the directory 'virtualstore' in
    your user directory (typically c:\users\USERNAME).
Because each user is given its own virtualstore directory,
all users will have their own save games and settings. If
you do not want this behaviour, it is recommended to
install Tsukihime in an unprotected directory instead.
Note that Windows Vista is the only operating system
showing this behaviour, normally all users share their
    savegames and game settings.

Because the current version of NSIS does not have proper
Windows Vista support, some features of the installer will
not function properly on systems with this OS. Most
specifically the uninstallation will not be able to remove
all installed components, especially if you installed in
    the Program Files directory.
It is recommended to uninstall Tsukihime manually on
Windows Vista. If you want to keep your savegames, do not
    remove save??.dat, gloval.sav, envdata and NScrflog.dat.

Using mp3 for background music (see chapter 7 below) may
cause ONScripter to freeze at random locations. We recommend
    using ogg-encoded files instead.
If you ripped your CD-DA music to a sample rate other than
44.1kHz, your music may play too fast or too slow. If this
occurs recreate your music at a sample rate of 44.1kHz.

 7. The In-Game Music
_____________________________

Tsukihime uses CD-DA for its music, meaning that the music
is plainly stored on the CD and playable on your stereo CD
player. In the English version, we set up ONScripter to
use mp3 or ogg music instead of CD-DA, for two reasons.
First of all, the current builds of ONScripter don't handle
playing CD-DA very well. Second, there are alternative
musical arrangements for Tsukihime that greatly improve the
    playing experience.

The effect is that you will have to rip your CD-DA music to
mp3 or ogg before you start playing. Because of many
problems with ONScripter freezing because of badly encoded
mp3 files, we recommend using ogg files instead.

For ripping CD-DA to ogg files, we recommend using CDex:
    http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/
After you download and install it, click Options / Settings
and under the tab 'Filenames' select an output directory
for your music files. Then select the drive where your CD
is located under the 'CD Drive' tab.
Next, go to the Encoder tab and choose the Ogg Vorbis DLL
Encoder as your encoder. Click OK, select all audio tracks
and click Convert / Extract CD Track(s) to a Compressed
    Audio File.

Once you have converted your CD-DA music to ogg, rename the
files to 'track01.ogg' through 'track10.ogg' and move them
to the subdirectory called 'CD' in your game directory.
Remember to delete your mp3 files if you used mp3 music in
a prior version of Tsukihime English.
Note that if your windows is hiding known file extensions
(this is the case if the files you ripped from the CD are
shown without an ogg extension in explorer), you should not
rename the files to track01.ogg through track10.ogg but
    simply to track01 through track10 .

The original Tsukihime music is not of very high quality,
and will get extremely boring if you listen to it for a
longer period of time. Because Tsukihime is quite long, we
recommend using one of the following rearrangements of the
    Tsukihime game music:

EVER AFTER - music from "Tsukihime" REPRODUCTION
Catalog Number: TMC-1003 or 1004 (Limited Edition)
The first nine tracks of this CD are revamped versions of
the first nine music tracks of Tsukihime. The tenth track
of Tsukihime is not available on this disc. The CD can be
      bought at Amazon:
      http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/switch-language/product
               /B0001927TM?language=en%5FJP
Be sure to copy both parts of the URL into your browser's
      address bar.

    TsukiBako version of Tsukihime
TsukiBako was a compilation release containing Tsukihime,
Tsukihime PLUS+DISC and Kagetsu Tohya. Whereas the music
on EVER AFTER could be considered a remix, the music
tracks on this CD are the same as in the original game,
      only with improved sample quality.

Note that it will probably be much more difficult to find
TsukiBako than it will be to obtain EVER AFTER. Both CDs
offer equally good music, it depends on personal preference
which one could be considered the best choice. To use these
arrangements, simply encode them to ogg and install them
    as described above.
